AN EXTENSIVE INFRASTRUCTURE<br />
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME IS UNDER WAY<br />
• <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s public sector has, <strong>for</strong> several years, been roll<strong>in</strong>g out an extensive capital expenditure programme<br />
aimed at address<strong>in</strong>g backlogs and capacity constra<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> the country’s physical <strong>in</strong>frastructure.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> ongo<strong>in</strong>g and planned fixed <strong>in</strong>vestment programme will raise the economy’s potential and permit a<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>able high-growth trajectory.<br />
• This long-term strategic programme to build an efficient, competitive and responsive economic <strong>in</strong>frastructure<br />
network is captured <strong>in</strong> the National Infrastructure Plan (NIP).<br />
• <strong>The</strong> energy, transport and water sectors represent the bulk of the <strong>in</strong>frastructure <strong>in</strong>vestment spend<strong>in</strong>g plans <strong>for</strong> the<br />
years ahead. <strong>The</strong> NIP also aims to support the <strong>in</strong>tegration of <strong>Africa</strong>n economies and the development of <strong>in</strong>traregional<br />
value cha<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
• <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s public sector spent ZAR255.1-billion on <strong>in</strong>frastructure development <strong>in</strong> the 2018/19 fiscal<br />
year, accord<strong>in</strong>g to National Treasury estimates. <strong>The</strong> bulk of public sector fixed <strong>in</strong>vestment expenditure is on<br />
construction works.<br />
