MONETARY POLICY SUPPORTIVE OF ECONOMIC GROWTH WHILE<br />

ANCHORING INFLATION EXPECTATIONS<br />

• Through prudent monetary policy, the <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n Reserve Bank (SARB) has succeeded <strong>in</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>flation<br />

expectations under control. Over the past couple of years, headl<strong>in</strong>e consumer price <strong>in</strong>flation has been generally<br />

hover<strong>in</strong>g around the mid-po<strong>in</strong>t of the SARB’s 3% to 6% <strong>in</strong>flation target band.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> absence of major cost-push shocks, with the exception of significant <strong>in</strong>creases <strong>in</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istered prices<br />

such as electricity tariffs, coupled with very limited demand-pull pressures contributed to a fairly stable <strong>in</strong>flation<br />

environment dur<strong>in</strong>g the past two years.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> downward trend <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>flation outcomes, reduced upside risks go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong>ward and expectations of an improv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>flation outlook prompted the Monetary Policy Committee of the SARB to lower the repurchase rate by 25 basis<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts to 6.50% at its July 2019 meet<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
