ADVANCED MANUFACTURING: INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES<br />

• Increased demand and/or regulatory pressure <strong>for</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g technologies has generated several newgeneration<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g opportunities.<br />

• <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> is among the pioneers of technology <strong>in</strong> the<br />

global fuel cell <strong>in</strong>dustry. Although still at a relatively early<br />

stage, the promis<strong>in</strong>g fuel cell arena is progress<strong>in</strong>g steadily.<br />

<strong>The</strong> competitive advantage emanat<strong>in</strong>g from be<strong>in</strong>g the largest<br />

plat<strong>in</strong>um producer <strong>in</strong> the world presents substantial leverage<br />

<strong>for</strong> the commercialisation of fuel cells, with Anglo American<br />

Plat<strong>in</strong>um spearhead<strong>in</strong>g this potential.<br />

• Advanced materials consist of new materials and<br />

modifications to exist<strong>in</strong>g materials, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g composites, to<br />

obta<strong>in</strong> superior per<strong>for</strong>mance and, among others, encourage<br />

the utilisation of waste materials. <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s resource base,<br />

well-developed <strong>in</strong>dustrial sectors and R&D capacity support<br />

the development of advanced materials production capacity.<br />

Investment opportunities <strong>in</strong> niche advanced materials exist <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s petrochemicals and aerospace <strong>in</strong>dustries.<br />

• <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> is among the countries that have made<br />

good progress <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g additive manufactur<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

commercialis<strong>in</strong>g university research related to 3D <strong>in</strong>dustries.<br />

MANUFACTURING<br />

• <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s additive manufactur<strong>in</strong>g capacity has expanded<br />

exponentially s<strong>in</strong>ce around 2010, with the total number of<br />

additive manufactur<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creased from 200<br />

<strong>in</strong> 2010 to more than 5 700 <strong>in</strong> 2018.<br />

• Additive manufactur<strong>in</strong>g technological and output capacity is<br />

most developed <strong>in</strong> the tool<strong>in</strong>g and refurbishment, aerospace<br />

and research segments of the <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n economy.<br />

• Automotive, consumer goods, defence and safety and<br />

security applications are important growth nodes <strong>for</strong> additive<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>.<br />

• Project Aeroswift, a large-area powder-bed additive<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g system, aims to unlock significant commercial<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestment opportunities <strong>in</strong> metal products additive<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the country. Project Aeroswift’s functional<br />

system development has been completed. Expansion<br />

of the functional system and development of a full-build<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g system are pend<strong>in</strong>g and require strategic <strong>in</strong>vestment<br />

participation.<br />
