AGRICULTURE AND AGRO-PROCESSING SECTORS<br />

• <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> has a well-developed commercial agriculture sector.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> country’s climatic diversity (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g temperate, subtropical and semi-desert) has given rise to a range of soil<br />

types that support the exploitation of a wide array of opportunities across the agribus<strong>in</strong>ess value cha<strong>in</strong>.<br />

• Biodiversity has segmented <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> <strong>in</strong>to various farm<strong>in</strong>g regions <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>tensive crop production <strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter<br />

ra<strong>in</strong>fall and high summer ra<strong>in</strong>fall areas, cattle ranch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the bushveld, and sheep farm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> arid regions.<br />

• Approximately 69% of <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s land is suitable <strong>for</strong> graz<strong>in</strong>g and other livestock farm<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Key agricultural and related products <strong>in</strong>clude corn, wheat, sugarcane, fruits (e.g. apples, citrus fruits, table<br />

grapes, berries), vegetables, nuts (e.g. groundnuts, pecan nuts, macadamias), beef, poultry, mutton, wool, fish<br />

and seafood.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> agro-process<strong>in</strong>g sector, <strong>in</strong> turn, has grown rapidly and accounts <strong>for</strong> a sizeable share of total manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

output. It <strong>in</strong>cludes a wide range of food process<strong>in</strong>g activities and beverages production (e.g. juices, w<strong>in</strong>es and<br />

dairy products).<br />

• After endur<strong>in</strong>g drought-<strong>in</strong>duced economic distress <strong>in</strong> 2015-16, <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s agriculture sector subsequently<br />

recorded robust growth across basically all of its sub-sectors (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g field crops, horticulture and animal<br />

farm<strong>in</strong>g).<br />

• <strong>The</strong> food process<strong>in</strong>g sub-sector has ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed robust growth <strong>in</strong> recent years, exceed<strong>in</strong>g growth <strong>in</strong> overall<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g sector output by 1.5 percentage po<strong>in</strong>ts, on average, s<strong>in</strong>ce 2008.<br />
