• <strong>The</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g sector was the pr<strong>in</strong>cipal target<br />
of <strong>for</strong>eign <strong>in</strong>vestor <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>for</strong> greenfield projects<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> <strong>in</strong> 2018, with the share claimed by<br />
manufactur<strong>in</strong>g projects account<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> a significantly<br />
higher 43.6% of the value of announced greenfield<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestments, from 24.8% <strong>in</strong> 2017.<br />
• Notable <strong>in</strong>vestments were targeted at chemicals<br />
and chemical products, coke and ref<strong>in</strong>ed petroleum<br />
products, food and beverages, as well as metals and<br />
metal products.<br />
• In the primary sector (ma<strong>in</strong>ly m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, oil and gas),<br />
there was a substantial rise <strong>in</strong> greenfield FDI projects,<br />
benefit<strong>in</strong>g from resource-seek<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vestments.<br />
• Although still relatively strong, announced greenfield<br />
projects <strong>in</strong> the services sector have been decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
over the years. Sharp decl<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> the electricity, gas<br />
and water sector as well as <strong>in</strong> the construction sector<br />
resulted <strong>in</strong> a 50% fall <strong>in</strong> greenfield <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong>flows<br />
<strong>in</strong> the services sectors collectively.<br />

Agriculture and agroprocess<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>Africa</strong> has 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land, with<br />
value-add<strong>in</strong>g opportunities <strong>in</strong> the food process<strong>in</strong>g sector;<br />
it has abundant water resources <strong>for</strong> energy generation,<br />
irrigation and potable water.<br />
M<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and m<strong>in</strong>erals<br />
beneficiation<br />
<strong>Africa</strong> is a major player <strong>in</strong> produc<strong>in</strong>g various m<strong>in</strong>eral<br />
resources such as plat<strong>in</strong>um, chromium, diamonds, gold,<br />
bauxite, cobalt, copper, phosphate and uranium. <strong>The</strong><br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ent has almost 8% of the world’s oil reserves. Its<br />
enviable resource endowment provides vast opportunities<br />
<strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and m<strong>in</strong>erals beneficiation.
