• Increased competitiveness and penetration by <strong>South</strong><br />

<strong>Africa</strong>n <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> global automotive cha<strong>in</strong>s have<br />

attracted higher <strong>in</strong>vestment by orig<strong>in</strong>al equipment<br />

manufacturers (OEMs) <strong>in</strong> the country’s automotive sector<br />

(e.g. Mercedes-Benz, BMW) as well as newcomers such<br />

as BAIC.<br />

• Ch<strong>in</strong>ese <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

has been facilitated by the Ch<strong>in</strong>a <strong>Africa</strong> Development<br />

Fund and focuses on electronics manufactur<strong>in</strong>g (e.g.<br />

establishment of the Hisense <strong>in</strong>dustrial park).<br />

• <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s world-class <strong>in</strong>frastructure and competitive<br />

position <strong>in</strong> access<strong>in</strong>g regional markets have attracted<br />

<strong>for</strong>eign <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong>to the textiles <strong>in</strong>dustry (e.g. Pegas<br />

Nonwovens, the largest producer of spunmelt nonwovens<br />

<strong>in</strong> Europe, the Middle East and <strong>Africa</strong>, is <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ZAR1.3-billion <strong>in</strong> Atlantis, Cape Town).<br />

AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY: WORLD-CLASS AND COMPETITIVE<br />

• <strong>The</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g sub-sector produc<strong>in</strong>g motor<br />

vehicles as well as vehicle parts and accessories,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g bodies and trailers, contributes 6.6% to<br />

the manufactur<strong>in</strong>g sector’s GDP and accounts <strong>for</strong><br />

approximately 10.2% of the total value of its sales.<br />

• <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> is the biggest market <strong>for</strong> new vehicles <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Africa</strong>, account<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> around 45% of new vehicle sales<br />

on the cont<strong>in</strong>ent.<br />

• Produc<strong>in</strong>g more than 610 000 vehicles annually, <strong>South</strong><br />

<strong>Africa</strong> is the dom<strong>in</strong>ant vehicle producer on the <strong>Africa</strong>n<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ent. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry attracts high levels of FDI<br />

from the lead<strong>in</strong>g global OEMs as well as components<br />

manufacturers.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g presence of several global OEMs <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> signals its <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g prom<strong>in</strong>ence as a<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g hub. <strong>The</strong>se <strong>in</strong>clude Toyota, VW, Ford,<br />

Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Nissan/Renault and Isuzu,<br />

with Ch<strong>in</strong>a’s BAIC as a newcomer. A number of heavy<br />

commercial and bus manufacturers assemble vehicles,<br />

such as Iveco, FAW and Tata.<br />

• Supplier proximity and local content are key potential<br />

sources of competitive advantage <strong>for</strong> OEMs. <strong>South</strong><br />

<strong>Africa</strong>n-based OEMs are supported by about 500<br />

firms split between Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers<br />

produc<strong>in</strong>g a wide range of parts.<br />
