CHEMICALS AND CHEMICAL PRODUCTS INDUSTRIES: BASIC<br />

CHEMICALS PRODUCTION CAPACITY SERVICING VARIOUS<br />

KEY SECTORS<br />

• <strong>The</strong> basic chemicals sub-sector, which contributes 3.7% to total manufactur<strong>in</strong>g GDP, encompasses the<br />

production of:<br />

- Commodity or base chemicals, which are produced <strong>in</strong> high volumes from raw commodities (e.g. oil, gas, coal)<br />

and used as feedstock <strong>in</strong>to other value cha<strong>in</strong>s;<br />

- Intermediate chemicals; and<br />

- Speciality chemicals, which are generally low volume, non-commodity (higher value-add) basic chemical<br />

products <strong>for</strong> more specialised applications.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> basic chemicals sub-sector produces around 600 types of chemicals that are essential <strong>in</strong>puts <strong>in</strong>to the supply<br />

cha<strong>in</strong>s of the agriculture, m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, manufactur<strong>in</strong>g (e.g. plastics, food process<strong>in</strong>g, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals,<br />

paper, pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g), construction and transportation sectors.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> basic chemicals sub-sector is supported by an abundance of raw materials, which <strong>for</strong>m the basis of certa<strong>in</strong><br />

competitive advantages. <strong>The</strong> fertiliser <strong>in</strong>dustry, <strong>for</strong> example, leverages on domestically available raw material<br />

<strong>in</strong>puts such as phosphates, phosphoric acid, nitrogen, ammonia, sulphur and potassium.<br />

• While the sub-sector is dom<strong>in</strong>ated by a few <strong>in</strong>tegrated, locally-based manufactur<strong>in</strong>g companies, it has attracted<br />

mult<strong>in</strong>ational corporations as well. <strong>The</strong> sub-sector is also grow<strong>in</strong>g its strategic orientation towards speciality<br />

chemicals and <strong>in</strong>termediate and end products.<br />
