Despite the government’s efforts to prevent media exposure of the
event to international audiences, coverage of June 4th smuggled out of
China by Western news agencies were able to preserve the legacy of
the protesters and confirm the atrocities committed that night. These
images would inform an outpouring of grief and anger in the aftermath,
as citizens publicly denounced the government’s actions in major urban
centers across the country and at Chinese consulates abroad.
