As shown in Figure 47, the oper<strong>at</strong>ion is started by invoking the command<br />

rman and entering the appropri<strong>at</strong>e commands directly or by submitting a<br />

command file containing the commands (1).<br />

RMAN connects to the recovery c<strong>at</strong>alog (2) and the target d<strong>at</strong>abase (3).<br />

Before any backup or restore oper<strong>at</strong>ions can be performed, RMAN alloc<strong>at</strong>es<br />

a channel to TSM, using the SBT API (4).<br />

RMAN then cre<strong>at</strong>es a server process on the target d<strong>at</strong>abase instance th<strong>at</strong><br />

performs the oper<strong>at</strong>ion (5).<br />

For restore oper<strong>at</strong>ions, RMAN queries the recovery c<strong>at</strong>alog to determine<br />

which files to restore from TSM. For a backup oper<strong>at</strong>ion, RMAN backs up the<br />

objects specified in the command to TSM. In both cases, the d<strong>at</strong>a is<br />

transferred on the previously defined channel.<br />
