6.2 Cre<strong>at</strong>ing a d<strong>at</strong>abase for the RMAN c<strong>at</strong>alog<br />

When RMAN is used to back up several d<strong>at</strong>abases using the same RMAN<br />

c<strong>at</strong>alog, you may wish to cre<strong>at</strong>e a separ<strong>at</strong>e recovery c<strong>at</strong>alog d<strong>at</strong>abase and<br />

cre<strong>at</strong>e the RMAN user in th<strong>at</strong> d<strong>at</strong>abase.<br />

In our test environment, we used an existing d<strong>at</strong>abase on a Sun Solaris<br />

system as a recovery c<strong>at</strong>alog for d<strong>at</strong>abases residing on an AIX system and<br />

on a Windows system.<br />

The recovery d<strong>at</strong>abase itself was backed up with RMAN using a recovery<br />

c<strong>at</strong>alog in another d<strong>at</strong>abase.<br />

Note<br />

<strong>Oracle</strong> recommends th<strong>at</strong> the recovery c<strong>at</strong>alog d<strong>at</strong>abase is oper<strong>at</strong>ed in<br />

ARCHIVELOG mode and loc<strong>at</strong>ed on another server than the production<br />

d<strong>at</strong>abase(s).<br />

Use the Export utility to make additional backups of your recovery c<strong>at</strong>alog<br />

d<strong>at</strong>a. An export of the c<strong>at</strong>alog allows the most flexibility when the recovery<br />

c<strong>at</strong>alog must be restored, because it can be restored to any existing<br />

<strong>Oracle</strong>8 d<strong>at</strong>abase.<br />

6.2.1 Cre<strong>at</strong>ing the RMAN c<strong>at</strong>alog<br />

The procedure we used to cre<strong>at</strong>e the recovery c<strong>at</strong>alog is described in the<br />

manual <strong>Oracle</strong>8i Recovery Manager User’s Guide and Reference,<br />
