Betonac employs more than 300 people and has a well-equipped laboratory to monitor the quality of concrete and asphalt mixtures as well as its own design office. Betonac has also been active on the private projects market and has successfully completed projects for Armasteel, Elia, Vopak and Kraft. Betonac has been involved in the construction of nearly every concrete or asphalt motorway in Belgium. For instance, the company resurfaced the A3, the E19 and the E411. In addition, the maintenance contract for the Province of Liège is still in progress. The redesign of the junction of the E313 and the E314 near Lummen is largely complete. In 2011, Betonac’s asphalt plant (BAM Asphalt) in Vinalmont had its busiest year, which means that it has doubled its workload in the space of four years. Betonac specialises in laying concrete road surfaces and relaid the concrete surface in both directions over seven kilometres of the E313 between Ham and Beringen in 2011. Betonac installed noise barriers along major transport arteries, such as the E313 at Hasselt, the E314 at Heusden-Zolder and the E411 at Hoeilaart, under a contract with the Flemish Government. Betonac joined forces with Breda-based sister company BAM Rail to take over Carmans Spoorwerken of Alken. The company’s civil engineering division continued work on giant projects such as the Liefkenshoek Railway Tunnel, Schuman-Josaphat and the Diabolo project in 2011. The projects that were delivered included the modernisation work along the route of the River Leie through Kortrijk, infrastructure for the Gewestelijk ExpresNet regional express network in and around Brussels (especially in Limal, Watermaal-Bosvoorde and Rixensart), the new bridges over the Nete in Duffel and the bridges at the Flanders Expo site known as ‘The Loop’ in Ghent. The bridge over the Albert Canal in Riemst was completed at the end of 2011. CEI-De Meyer has been working on several projects for industry customers, especially in the Port of Antwerp. Storage tanks were successfully installed for Ineos and Sea-Tank, for example. The Buildings division also had a healthy order book in 2011 with work ongoing or starting on unique projects such as HanzePark in Bruges, Dossinkazerne barracks in Mechelen, a residential care centre in Sint-Niklaas, an administrative centre in Willebroek, a service centre in Boom and the Vanderelst office block in Leuven.

Substantial progress was also made at the following major construction sites (as part of a consortium): the new permanent NATO headquarters in Brussels, the Ernotte, Bervoets and Bruyn-West residential projects and the renovation of the Crossing Schaarbeek football stadium. The construction projects carried out by CEI-De Meyer for subsidiary Immo BAM proceeded as expected, the Bara-De Lijn residential complex in Anderlecht, the Remy II office complex in Leuven and the HanzePark residential project being particular highlights. A large part of the Kantienberg PPP project was delivered earlier than planned in the second half of the year – to the great satisfaction of the University of Ghent. During the year under review, a number of prestigious contracts were in progress, such as the remediation of the Olympic Park at Stratford (including the infrastructure, the green areas and the bridges), the upgrade of Blackpool’s historic tram system (with involvement from BAM Rail), the upgrade of Tottenham Court Road and Victoria tube stations in Central London, the refurbishment of the northbound bore of the Blackwall road tunnel in London, the Luton to Dunstable Guided Busway, the Evergreen 3 rail improvement scheme between London Marylebone and Birmingham and the Managed Motorways Framework. Major contracts secured by BAM Nuttall include the construction of the new station at Farringdon and the removal of surplus material across all schemes in the building of the Crossrail Tunnel. Two contracts were awarded for legacy work on the Olympic Park. Confirmation has been received as preferred contractor in a consortium for the earthworks contract for the new Hinkley Point C nuclear power station. Despite the current recession, the forward order book position remains fairly healthy. Opportunities to tender for projects remain solid although work winning activity is now confined to small geographical pockets.
