Ambalavao
Nichée au cœur de la région de Haute Matsiatra, Ambalavao
regorge de trésors naturels et de traditions culturelles.
Ambalavao se situe dans la zone qui marque la limite
entre les hautes terres et le Sud de Madagascar,
à 57km au sud de Fianarantsoa. Elle est entourée
de paysages spectaculaires dont des collines
verdoyantes, des cascades et des vallées. Ses sentiers
mènent vers des points de vue offrant de panoramas
à couper le souffle tels que le Pic Boby (point
culminant du massif d’Andringitra, deuxième plus
haut sommet de Madagascar, 2658m) et la Réserve
d’Anja, abritant des lémuriens.
Les rues sont bordées de maisons traditionnelles
betsileo ornées de varangue, avec des balustrades de
bois à motifs de différentes formes géométriques.
Cette ville est dotée d’un riche patrimoine culturel,
les traditions ancestrales y sont perpétuées notamment
la fabrication du papier Antemoro et l’art de la soie. Les
techniques artisanales sont transmises de génération
en génération. Vous pouvez visiter les ateliers pour
observer de visu l'habileté des artisans, l’élevage du
ver à soie, le tissage du landy ou encore les broderies.
Assistez au marché hebdomadaire, chaque mercredi,
pour vous immerger dans l'authenticité de la culture
malgache. Au sud de la ville se donne également le
rendez-vous des éleveurs et acheteurs de bétails
puisqu’il s’agit du deuxième plus grand marché aux
zébus de Madagascar. Il dure deux jours, le mercredi
pour les négociations et le lendemain pour le transport.
Très respectueux du fihavanana, les habitants
d’Ambalavao sont connus pour leur hospitalité
chaleureuse et leur convivialité.
Nestling at the heart of the region of Haute Matsiatra, Ambalavao
is teaming with natural treasures and cultural traditions.
Ambalavao is located 57km south of Fianarantsoa, in the area
marking the boundary between the high plateaus and the
south of Madagascar. It is surrounded by spectacular scenery,
such as waterfalls, lush green hills and valleys. The footpaths
in the region lead up to breathtaking view points, such as
the Pic Boby (at 2,658m, the highest peak of the Andringitra
massif and the second highest in Madagascar) and, also, the
Anja reserve, sheltering a large number of lemurs.
The streets are lined with traditional Betsileo houses,
each with a veranda that has an ornamental wooden
balustrade decorated with different geometric shapes.
The town has a rich cultural heritage, with ancestral
traditions such as the manufacture of Antemoro paper
and hand-made silk production, with know-how handed
down from generation to generation. You can visit
workshops to observe the skills of the craftsmen, rearing
of silkworms, weaving of the landy, as well as embroidery.
On Wednesdays, stroll through the weekly market to
experience authentic Malagasy culture. The south of the
town is also, the meeting point for breeders and buyers
of cattle, with Madagascar’s second largest zebu market,
which lasts for two days: Wednesdays for negotiations and
Thursdays for transport.
Having a great respect for fihavanana means that the
inhabitants of Ambalavao are well-known for their warm
hospitality and friendly welcome.
