LEONARDO COCCORANTE,

1680 NAPLES – CA. 1750, ATTRIBUTED

A pair of paintings

PORT WITH COLUMN LOGGIA AND

APPROACHING STORM

and

PORT WITH ANCIENT MONUMENT AND CALM

SEAS

Oil on copper.

30.9 x 73.5 cm.

The two paintings in a decidedly elongated landscape

format relate to each other in terms of content, which

emphasizes their cohesiveness. When the pair is

viewed together the actual message is “calm after

the storm“. Coccorante was an important representative

of the genre of ruin landscapes or ruin capricci.

However, his works differ stylistically significantly from

Roman painters such as Ricci or Piranesi because

he was active much earlier, at the emergence of

this genre.
