Life cycle: An annual grass that<br />
grows to 120 cm tall. Propagates by<br />
seeds, which may rema<strong>in</strong> dormant.<br />
Habitat: Prefers wet soils and<br />
swampy areas.<br />
<strong>Weed</strong>y nature: A vigorous, aggressive<br />
weed. Seeds shatter easily, so<br />
that there is a c<strong>on</strong>stant source of<br />
<strong>in</strong>festati<strong>on</strong>. Dur<strong>in</strong>g vegetative growth,<br />
resembles the rice plant, mak<strong>in</strong>g it<br />
difficult to recognize as a weed.<br />
I. rugosum, however, has deep reddish-brown<br />
to purple leaf sheaths, a<br />
color <strong>on</strong>ly weakly developed <strong>in</strong> rice.<br />
