Life cycle: An annual broadleaf with<br />

succulent and fleshy stems that are<br />

sometimes reddish brown. Grows as<br />

tall as 50 cm. Propagates by seeds<br />

and stem cutt<strong>in</strong>gs. Produces<br />

numerous black seeds that normally<br />

are not dormant.<br />

Habitat Grows <strong>in</strong> upland fields.<br />

<strong>Weed</strong>y nature: A prolific seed<br />

producer that grows quickly and<br />

flowers and produces seeds throughout<br />

the year. Difficult to c<strong>on</strong>trol by<br />

cultivati<strong>on</strong> because plants with flower<br />

buds have enough water stored <strong>in</strong> the<br />

stems and leaves to complete seed<br />

producti<strong>on</strong> after they have been cut.<br />

Cut fleshy stems root easily up<strong>on</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>tact with soil. Under drought<br />

stress, sheds its leaves and survives<br />

until water becomes available. Can<br />

complete its life cycle with<strong>in</strong> 6 wk.<br />

Seeds can rema<strong>in</strong> viable for a l<strong>on</strong>g<br />

time.<br />
