Hand weed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Hand weed<strong>in</strong>g is the most effective<br />

weed c<strong>on</strong>trol method <strong>in</strong> deepwater<br />

and float<strong>in</strong>g rice. <strong>Weed</strong><strong>in</strong>g should be<br />

d<strong>on</strong>e 15-25 d after plant<strong>in</strong>g. Two to<br />

three hand weed<strong>in</strong>gs may be neces-<br />

sary, depend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> the time of flood-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>Weed</strong>s germ<strong>in</strong>ate earlier and grow<br />

more vigorously than rice dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

preflood period. Mechanical weed<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ed with hand weed<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

weed removal with<strong>in</strong> the rows, may<br />

be effective when rice is row-seeded.<br />

Herbicides<br />

Most comm<strong>on</strong> weeds present before<br />

flood<strong>in</strong>g can be c<strong>on</strong>trolled by the<br />

herbicides recommended for upland<br />

rice. Butachlor, oxadiaz<strong>on</strong>,<br />

pendimethal<strong>in</strong>, thiobencarb, pipero-<br />

phos-dimethametryn, and oxyfluorfen<br />

are effective when applied preemer-<br />

gence. Postemergence herbicides such<br />

as propanil, 2-4D, and MCPA are also<br />

effective <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>troll<strong>in</strong>g weeds such as<br />

I. aquatica. Residual herbicides give<br />

variable results when applied to dry<br />

soils or when flash floods occur so<strong>on</strong><br />

after applicati<strong>on</strong>. Glyphosate can be<br />

rice. Bars (—) show periods when a<br />

particular herbicide can be applied. *Tim<strong>in</strong>g<br />
