Life cycle: An annual broadleaf that<br />

can grow as tall as 120 cm at flower-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g. Propagates by seeds. Seed germi-<br />

nates throughout the year. In some<br />

areas, 50% of the seeds germ<strong>in</strong>ate<br />

with<strong>in</strong> 2 wk after shedd<strong>in</strong>g; <strong>in</strong> other<br />

areas, the seed has a pr<strong>on</strong>ounced<br />

dormancy with about 1% of the seeds<br />

germ<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g after some m<strong>on</strong>ths.<br />

Habitat: Grows <strong>in</strong> dry to moist soils.<br />

<strong>Weed</strong>y nature: Am<strong>on</strong>g the most<br />

comm<strong>on</strong> weeds found <strong>in</strong> rice. Rapidly<br />

col<strong>on</strong>izes cultivated areas. Has a short<br />

life cycle and completes several cycles<br />

<strong>in</strong> a year. Produces enormous amounts<br />

of seeds, which are dispersed by w<strong>in</strong>d<br />

and water. Seeds germ<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>in</strong> a wide<br />

range of envir<strong>on</strong>ments. As so<strong>on</strong> as the<br />

first stand is destroyed, another flush<br />

of seedl<strong>in</strong>gs grows.<br />

Agricultural c<strong>on</strong>cern: Can achieve a<br />

dense growth and compete with rice<br />

for nutrients and moisture. Can reduce<br />

rice yields 40%.<br />
