Life cycle: An annual grass that can<br />

grow as tall as 90 cm. Propagates by<br />

oval, tan to brownish seeds. In the<br />

tropics, seed has little or no dormancy<br />

and germ<strong>in</strong>ates throughout the year<br />

when moisture is available.<br />

Habitat: Normally grows under<br />

dryland c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s: does not thrive <strong>in</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uously flooded soils.<br />

<strong>Weed</strong>y nature: A prolific seed<br />

producer; has a short life cycle and can<br />

complete several life cycles <strong>in</strong> a year.<br />

Easily adapts to the envir<strong>on</strong>ment-for<br />

example, grows erect when <strong>in</strong> competiti<strong>on</strong><br />

with rice and prostrate when not <strong>in</strong><br />

competiti<strong>on</strong>. Young plants resemble<br />

rice, which makes hand weed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

difficult at early weed stages.<br />
