Non Commercial Chapter 3 – OBD II Inspection Introduction Commencing October 1, 2008, the emission test will be performed prior to the safety test. We now have an OBD II system that is used on all 1996 and newer passenger cars and light-duty trucks. This system continuously monitors the vehicle’s emissions performance and, in case of a malfunction, triggers a light (the MIL) to warn the driver, while setting a code (DTC) indicating the problem. OBD II provides us with an emission testing system that rides with the vehicle at all times.
