MEDIA KIT<br />

• Implementing a 24-hour fi re preparedness measures<br />

by households having ready water buckets <strong>and</strong> s<strong>and</strong> at<br />

strategic places in <strong>the</strong>ir homes.<br />

• Organizing <strong>and</strong> streng<strong>the</strong>ning of <strong>community</strong> fi re<br />

volunteers brigades composed of youth, women <strong>and</strong><br />

men were done to guard <strong>the</strong> <strong>community</strong> against fi re.<br />

• Training <strong>and</strong> education on fi re drills <strong>and</strong> fi rst aid<br />

were conducted to enhance skills of <strong>community</strong> fi re<br />

volunteers.<br />

• Enforcing fi re safety regulations such as inspection<br />

<strong>and</strong> rehabilitation of electrical wiring system, widening<br />

of roads for easy access to fi re services, installation of<br />

fi re hydrants <strong>and</strong> regular <strong>community</strong> clean up.<br />

• Networking <strong>and</strong> resource generation was planned by<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>community</strong> through fundraising activities for <strong>the</strong><br />

Ban Hatsady Security Community Welfare Fund to<br />

support <strong>disaster</strong>-affected families.<br />

Lessons learned from <strong>the</strong> Ban Hatsady fi re <strong>risk</strong> mapping<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>risk</strong> reduction planning experiences were: <strong>the</strong><br />

importance of <strong>community</strong>-<strong>based</strong> approach to <strong>disaster</strong><br />

mitigation; enhancing skills <strong>and</strong> knowledge in fi re<br />

prevention; <strong>community</strong> self-help by improving skills of fi re<br />

volunteers; proper selection of <strong>community</strong> fi re volunteers;<br />

manual mapping works; budgeting attributes for longterm<br />

sustainability; replicating success to neighboring<br />

communities; building a safe <strong>and</strong> sustainable <strong>community</strong>;<br />

regular monitoring ensures long-term <strong>community</strong> safety;<br />

holistic <strong>and</strong> integrated planning; adherence to building<br />

<strong>and</strong> fi re safety code is an outst<strong>and</strong>ing challenge; <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> importance of cooperation/coordination among<br />

stakeholders.<br />
