• Implementing a 24-hour fi re preparedness measures
by households having ready water buckets and sand at
strategic places in their homes.
• Organizing and strengthening of community fi re
volunteers brigades composed of youth, women and
men were done to guard the community against fi re.
• Training and education on fi re drills and fi rst aid
were conducted to enhance skills of community fi re
volunteers.
• Enforcing fi re safety regulations such as inspection
and rehabilitation of electrical wiring system, widening
of roads for easy access to fi re services, installation of
fi re hydrants and regular community clean up.
• Networking and resource generation was planned by
the community through fundraising activities for the
Ban Hatsady Security Community Welfare Fund to
support disaster-affected families.
Lessons learned from the Ban Hatsady fi re risk mapping
and risk reduction planning experiences were: the
importance of community-based approach to disaster
mitigation; enhancing skills and knowledge in fi re
prevention; community self-help by improving skills of fi re
volunteers; proper selection of community fi re volunteers;
manual mapping works; budgeting attributes for longterm
sustainability; replicating success to neighboring
communities; building a safe and sustainable community;
regular monitoring ensures long-term community safety;
holistic and integrated planning; adherence to building
and fi re safety code is an outstanding challenge; and
the importance of cooperation/coordination among
stakeholders.
