MEDIA KIT<br />

The bags should not be too full with s<strong>and</strong>. This allows one<br />

to overlap ano<strong>the</strong>r, which locks bags toge<strong>the</strong>r. Bags should<br />

be placed in a way such that each layer is at a right angle<br />

to <strong>the</strong> layers above <strong>and</strong> below, to add stability. To prevent<br />

seepage, a durable plastic sheet can be placed to cover<br />

<strong>the</strong> side exposed to fl ood water. An alternative way could<br />

be to construct a stack of small wooden planks, empty oil<br />

barrels, etc. <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n place s<strong>and</strong>bags in front of <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

add stability. A plastic sheet can be placed to cover <strong>the</strong><br />

side exposed to fl ood water in order to prevent passage of<br />

water through s<strong>and</strong>bags.<br />

If evacuation is advised…<br />

When you are advised to evacuate by <strong>community</strong> leaders<br />

or o<strong>the</strong>r local authorities, please follow <strong>the</strong> earlier plan<br />

agreed upon by <strong>the</strong> <strong>community</strong>. If you decide to leave <strong>the</strong><br />

area on your own, please inform <strong>the</strong> responsible people,<br />

neighbors <strong>and</strong> give all <strong>the</strong> details of <strong>the</strong> place you are<br />

going to.<br />

Before leaving take <strong>the</strong> following actions:<br />

• Collect all your valuables, documents, certifi cates, etc.<br />

• Stack your furniture <strong>and</strong> possessions above likely fl ood<br />

level<br />

• Turn off electricity, gas supply <strong>and</strong> water <strong>and</strong> close<br />

windows <strong>and</strong> doors of <strong>the</strong> house<br />

• Take care of all electrical appliances<br />

• Empty freezers <strong>and</strong> refrigerators; leave <strong>the</strong> doors open;<br />

unplug <strong>the</strong>m<br />

• Do not forget your emergency <strong>kit</strong><br />

• Lock <strong>the</strong> windows <strong>and</strong> doors of your house before<br />

leaving<br />

• Be sure to follow <strong>the</strong> recommended evacuation routes
