Do<br />

• Unplug heat-producing appliances, e.g. irons <strong>and</strong><br />

toasters, when you are not using <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

• Have suffi cient ventilation for appliances such as your<br />

TV, video, refrigerator, etc.<br />

Don’t<br />

• Leave your cooking unattended.<br />

• Forgetfully leave your hot iron on clo<strong>the</strong>s or <strong>the</strong> ironing<br />

pad.<br />

• Leave combustible materials, e.g. curtains, clo<strong>the</strong>s,<br />

etc., close to light bulbs.<br />

Electrical hazards<br />

Electricity makes your home appliances, e.g. TV, fan, kettle, etc.<br />

function. However, we must not forget about <strong>the</strong> potential fi re hazards<br />

while using <strong>the</strong>m. Always take care to use <strong>the</strong>m properly <strong>and</strong> safely.<br />

Do<br />

• Switch off electrical appliances if not in use, especially<br />

irons, lights, fans, bath heaters, <strong>and</strong> TV.<br />

• Always consult a qualifi ed electrician for any electrical<br />

fi tting.<br />

• Inspect <strong>and</strong> replace worn-out insulation.<br />

• Tighten any loose wire connection.<br />

• Only use plugs that fi t outlet (a three prong plug should<br />

only go into a three prong outlet).<br />

• Check that wire insulation is in good condition.<br />

• Keep motors <strong>and</strong> tools properly lubricated.<br />

• Use extension cords only when necessary <strong>and</strong> only if<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are rated high enough for <strong>the</strong> job.<br />

• Use waterproof cords outdoors.<br />

• Follow manufacturer’s instructions for all electrical<br />

equipment.<br />

• Leave electrical repairs to skilled maintenance<br />

personnel <strong>and</strong> licensed electricians.<br />
