MEDIA KIT<br />

When <strong>the</strong> typhoon is less than 24 hours away<br />

Rain <strong>and</strong> wind usually had started to increase some hours<br />

earlier.<br />

• Complete any of <strong>the</strong> previously-mentioned measures<br />

that were not fi nished.<br />

• Dismantle well pumps <strong>and</strong> place <strong>the</strong>m in a safe place.<br />

Cover wells.<br />

• Harvest <strong>and</strong> store any ripe crops. Cut most leaves of<br />

cassava <strong>and</strong> banana trees to reduce wind damage.<br />

• Close <strong>and</strong> secure windows with shutters <strong>and</strong> tape. Put<br />

extra catches <strong>and</strong> crossbars on doors <strong>and</strong> windows.<br />

• If you have no shutters or tape, it is advisable to paste a<br />

thick layer of newspaper or o<strong>the</strong>r paper over <strong>the</strong> inside<br />

of windows using a paste made from water <strong>and</strong> rice,<br />

cassava or taro starch. This may not stop windows<br />

breaking but will reduce <strong>the</strong> chance of people inside<br />

being sprayed with bits of broken glass if <strong>the</strong> window<br />

breaks.<br />

• Fill water containers with safe drinking water <strong>and</strong> cover<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. Try to have at least 5 liters for every person in<br />

<strong>the</strong> family. Fill o<strong>the</strong>r containers with water for washing,<br />

etc.<br />

• Remove clocks, pictures <strong>and</strong> wall hangings from walls<br />

<strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r objects from shelves. Secure those items in<br />

a safe place, preferably above fl ood level.<br />

• Place valuables, equipment, tools <strong>and</strong> appliances in<br />

a small room that is considered <strong>the</strong> strongest in <strong>the</strong><br />

house. If possible move <strong>the</strong>m above fl ood level.<br />

• Place papers in plastic bags <strong>and</strong> store above fl ood<br />

level.<br />

• Cover larger furniture, fi ling cabinets, computers, etc.<br />

with plastic sheeting or large plastic bags. Small offi ce<br />

equipment, including telephones, can be placed in<br />

drawers.<br />

• Remove all clothing, etc. from lines <strong>and</strong> drawers <strong>and</strong><br />

store in plastic bags <strong>and</strong> sacks.<br />

• Confi rm that <strong>the</strong> emergency food supplies are in a safe<br />

place with some protected cooking utensils.
