The habits and circumstances of the pioneers AA'ere not conducive to
temperance, yet before the middle of the nineteenth century the Sons
of Temperance AA'ere organized, and failed, it is said, because they excluded
Avoinen from membership. Mr. S. 0. Kellogg then conceived the
idea of a temperance society in which the sexes should be equal. wAs the
result of his thinking the Ark of Temperance AVIIS founded, and AVIIS
successful for many years. The parent organization numbered at one
time 108, and from its influence several other arks Avere formed, so that
the order came to number at one time more than 800. This society AVIIS
« a great help to the moral, intellectual and social life of the tOAvnship.
