Avere elected justices of the peace; F. W. FoAvler, constable, and Almon
Ru'ggles, recorder.
February 7, 1809, the Legislature authorized the erection of Huron
County, embracing all the fire-lands. January 29, 1811, the Legislature
appointed as commissioners to fix the seat of the county, E. Quinby, of
Trumbull County; Stephen Clark, of Geauga, and Solomon GrisAVold,
of Ashtabula. They located the county- seat at Camp Avery, about a
mile beloAV the site of Milan Village. The first court" was held at this
point, or at the residence of David Abbott, in the fall of 1815, in AA'hich

year the county AVIIS organized. Considerable dissatisfaction Avas expressed
by those who attended this court, because there AA'as no good
water procurable, and somebody suggested that good Avater might be
found on the sand ridge running through Norwalk ToAvnship. This
caused a movement, that resulted in the county seat being taken aAvay
from Milan in 1818 by a process similar to that by which it Avas
originally.
A courthouse Avas commenced in 1817, on the Abbott farm, but AA-as
never finished.
