A remembrance museum housed in the
former prison of the judicial district of Sort, where nearly 3,000 refugees who had crossed
the Pyrenees on foot were imprisoned. they were basically Frenchmen who wanted to join
the allied army in northern Africa, Jews fleeing nazi persecution and allied aviators who
wanted to rejoin the fighting from England, after crossing the iberian Peninsula.
linked to the museum is the Freedom trail, a waymarked cross-border mountain trail using
the path taken by thousands of refugees fleeing from nazi-occupied Europe during the
Second World War, between the department of Ariège (France) and Pallars Sobirà county,
through the port of Pala de Clavera.
