Ph.D. stu<strong>de</strong>nts holding scholarships awar<strong>de</strong>d by the Politecnico di Milano, be they from funds allocatedby ministerial <strong>de</strong>crees or from University funds or from funds disbursed by public or privateinstitutions, shall be exempted from paym<strong>en</strong>t university taxes and tuition fees.In addition to and in compliance with Article 8 of the Decree of the Premier of 9.4.2001, candidateswho receive scholarships from autonomous regions or provinces, or foreign stu<strong>de</strong>nts receivingscholarships from the Italian governm<strong>en</strong>t – within the ambit of programs for <strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t cooperationand cultural and sci<strong>en</strong>tific inter-governm<strong>en</strong>tal agreem<strong>en</strong>ts, as well as any relative periodical executiveprograms – are exempted from the paym<strong>en</strong>t of registration taxes and university fees.These b<strong>en</strong>eficiaries are nevertheless obliged to pay the regional tax for stu<strong>de</strong>nt b<strong>en</strong>efits and grants,insurance and administrative exp<strong>en</strong>ses amounting to Euro 144.20, to be ma<strong>de</strong> before expiry of thefirst instalm<strong>en</strong>t and according to the procedures outlined in art. 9.Stu<strong>de</strong>nts with a disability of at least 66% are also exempted from paym<strong>en</strong>t of <strong>en</strong>rolm<strong>en</strong>t and tuitionfees, apart form the above paym<strong>en</strong>t of Euro 144.20.If a Ph.D. stu<strong>de</strong>nt, during the programme, r<strong>en</strong>ounces the scholarship, the same in its total or residualamount will be assigned to the first stu<strong>de</strong>nt in the same cycle and Ph.D. programme without ascholarship, according to their ranking, taking into account eligibility for topic scholarships.Replacem<strong>en</strong>t PhD stu<strong>de</strong>nts, in or<strong>de</strong>r to b<strong>en</strong>efit from the scholarship, must accept the topic andconditions associated with the scholarship awar<strong>de</strong>d.For each year of <strong>en</strong>rolm<strong>en</strong>t, regional taxes, acci<strong>de</strong>nt insurance premiums, stamp duties and any taxesforese<strong>en</strong> by curr<strong>en</strong>t legislation are automatically <strong>de</strong>ducted from the scholarship amount.Ph.D. stu<strong>de</strong>nts admitted without a scholarship are required to pay the first and second instalm<strong>en</strong>t oftaxes and tuition fees, respectively amounting to Euro 618.20 and Euro 882.00, submitting the receiptof paym<strong>en</strong>t to the Ph.D. Registrar's Office.The amount due for taxes and tuition fees may be adjusted on an annual basis.Art. 11(Compulsory att<strong>en</strong>dance and <strong>en</strong>rolm<strong>en</strong>t in subsequ<strong>en</strong>t years)Each year Ph.D. stu<strong>de</strong>nts are subjected to an examination to be admitted to the next year.If the exam is passed an admission assessm<strong>en</strong>t of A, B , C or D is giv<strong>en</strong>.If the exam is not passed, the Ph.D. stu<strong>de</strong>nt will be <strong>de</strong>fined as Repeating or Not Eligible to continuethe Ph.D. programme: in both cases, the scholarship will be revoked.In the annual exam of the third year the Ph.D. stu<strong>de</strong>nt will be assessed for admission to the finalexam with the external Commission. Should the stu<strong>de</strong>nt have achieved satisfactory results, but needsadditional time for preparation of the thesis, he/she may obtain an ext<strong>en</strong>sion of 6 or 12 months, withpaym<strong>en</strong>t of the fee of Euro 144.20.At the beginning of each year, Ph.D. stu<strong>de</strong>nts admitted without a scholarship are required to pay thefirst and second instalm<strong>en</strong>t of taxes and tuition fees, respectively amounting to Euro 618.20 and Euro882.00, submitting the receipt of paym<strong>en</strong>t to the Ph.D. Registrar's Office.The amount due for taxes and tuition fees may be adjusted on an annual basis.Enrolled stu<strong>de</strong>nts are required to att<strong>en</strong>d the Ph.D. programmes and must continually – on a full-timebasis (with the exception of those registered in Executive Ph.D. programmes) – implem<strong>en</strong>t study andresearch activities within the facilities assigned for this purpose, in accordance with the procedures<strong>de</strong>termined by the Faculty Committee.Art. 12(Common rules)Multiple <strong>en</strong>rolm<strong>en</strong>ts in more than one Ph.D. programme at the Politecnico di Milano or anotherUniversity are prohibited. Applicants obtaining admission to several Ph.D. programmes must opt for<strong>en</strong>rolm<strong>en</strong>t in one of these and will be exclu<strong>de</strong>d from all other rankings in which he/she was admittedor eligible. Multiple registrations in a Ph.D. programme and a Bachelor of Sci<strong>en</strong>ce programme or aMaster of Sci<strong>en</strong>ce programme or at a Graduate School or in a specialisation programme or UniversityMaster programme are prohibited.Those <strong>en</strong>rolled in Specialization Schools and who are accepted to att<strong>en</strong>d a Ph.D. programme mustsusp<strong>en</strong>d their curr<strong>en</strong>t specialization studies until the Ph.D. programme is completed.Successful applicants may perform a limited amount of fixed-term contract activity in support ofteaching and research within the University.Art. 13(Attainm<strong>en</strong>t of the Ph.D. qualification)The qualification of PhD is awar<strong>de</strong>d after passing the final examination which may be repeated onceonly. The Ph.D. thesis can be writt<strong>en</strong> in a foreign language with the approval of the Aca<strong>de</strong>mic BoardThe results are confirmed by a Commission whose establishm<strong>en</strong>t is <strong>de</strong>termined by MD no. 224 of30.04.1999 and the regulations pertaining to Ph.D.s of this University.The qualification is awar<strong>de</strong>d by the Rector of Politecnico di Milano.10
