Tapani Paavonen, Project leader
The project title “Triumph of Competition” refers to the transition from a relatively regulated
economy of a corporatist consensus society to market economy in post-World War II Finland. The
project consists of six distinct research projects: Dr Tapani Paavonen, project leader: From National
Governance to Global Market Economy. The Adjustment of the Finnish Consensus Society to
Economic Internationalization from the early 1980s to EU Membership; Dr Kari Teräs: The
Emergence of Competition Ideology and Institutional Change in the Finnish Economy; Dr Mika
Kallioinen: The Formation of the Finnish Competition Legislation, 1958–1992; M.Soc.Sc. Liisa
Lähteenmäki: Temporary Agency Work. Identity and Regulation; MA Jarkko Keskinen: Response
of the Finnish Economy to Globalization, 1980–2005; and MA Pentti Mäkelä: Cartels in the Finnish
Economy.
specify how different social groups have been affected by societal decision-making within different
economic governance systems during the past decades. As a matter of summary, we try to specify
the characteristic features of different periods in recent Finnish history from this point of view to
shed light on the question “where power lies” in the Finnish society.
