Ces résultats révèlent également qu’au Sénégal une proportion importante d’enfants <strong>de</strong> moins <strong>de</strong> 15 ans (15 %) ne vit avec aucun <strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong>ux parents biologiques. On remarque que c<strong>et</strong>te proportion augmente rapi<strong>de</strong>ment avec l’âge <strong>de</strong> l’enfant : passant <strong>de</strong> 2 % chez les moins <strong>de</strong> 2 ans à 23 % pour les enfants <strong>de</strong> 10-14 ans. Ces fortes proportions d’enfants vivant sans leurs parents peuvent s’expliquer par la scolarisation. En eff<strong>et</strong>, étant donné l’insuffisance <strong>de</strong>s écoles <strong>de</strong> second cycle, il est fréquent que les enfants admis en 6e aillent poursuivre leurs étu<strong>de</strong>s dans <strong>de</strong>s écoles éloignées <strong>de</strong> leur domicile familial <strong>et</strong> soient ainsi confiés à d’autres parents ou amis <strong>de</strong> la famille. En outre, les résultats font apparaître que la proportion d’orphelins <strong>de</strong> moins <strong>de</strong> 15 ans vivant seulement avec leur mère biologique est plus élevée que celle <strong>de</strong>s enfants qui vivent seulement avec leur père biologique, quelle que soit la caractéristique sociodémographique considérée. Selon le milieu <strong>de</strong> rési<strong>de</strong>nce, on observe que la proportion d’enfants <strong>de</strong> moins <strong>de</strong> 15 ans vivant avec leurs <strong>de</strong>ux parents biologiques est plus importante en milieu rural (60 %) qu’en milieu urbain (55 %). Il faut noter en fonction <strong>de</strong>s régions que c’est dans que les régions <strong>de</strong> Tambacounda (69 %), Kaolack (66 %) <strong>et</strong> Kolda (65 %) que l’on observe les proportions les plus élevées d’enfants <strong>de</strong> moins <strong>de</strong> 15 ans vivant avec leurs <strong>de</strong>ux parents. Le niveau le plus faible est observé à Ziguinchor (46,3 %). Quelle que soit la région considérée, on constate que les proportions d’enfants vivant seulement avec leur mère (variant d’un maximum <strong>de</strong> 31 % dans Louga à 15 % dans Kolda) sont plus élevées que celles <strong>de</strong>s enfants vivant seulement avec leur père ou vivant sans aucun <strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong>ux parents. En outre, les résultats du tableau 2.3 semblent m<strong>et</strong>tre en évi<strong>de</strong>nce une association négative entre le niveau <strong>de</strong> bien-être <strong>de</strong>s parents <strong>et</strong> la proportion d’enfants vivant avec les <strong>de</strong>ux parents biologiques. En eff<strong>et</strong>, la proportion d’enfants vivant avec les <strong>de</strong>ux parents diminue au fur <strong>et</strong> à mesure que le niveau <strong>de</strong> bien-être du ménage s’améliore, passant ainsi <strong>de</strong> 68 % chez ceux du quintile le plus pauvre à 50 % chez ceux du quintile le plus riche. Par contre, la proportion d’enfants vivant seulement avec leur mère biologique, que le père soit en vie ou non, est positivement associée au niveau <strong>de</strong> bien-être du ménage : elle varie <strong>de</strong> 16 % chez les plus pauvres à 30 % chez les plus riches. Cependant, en ce qui concerne les proportions d’enfants vivant seulement avec leur père biologique, on ne constate pas <strong>de</strong> variation significative avec le niveau <strong>de</strong> bien-être du ménage. 2.4 NIVEAU D’INSTRUCTION ET FRÉQUENTATION SCOLAIRE Au cours <strong>de</strong> l’enquête ménage, <strong>de</strong>s informations relatives au niveau d’instruction atteint <strong>et</strong> à la <strong>de</strong>rnière classe achevée à ce niveau ont été collectées pour toutes les personnes âgées <strong>de</strong> 6 ans <strong>et</strong> plus recensées dans le ménage. L’instruction <strong>de</strong> la population <strong>et</strong> surtout celle <strong>de</strong>s femmes est un élément important pour l’amélioration <strong>de</strong>s conditions <strong>de</strong> vie <strong>de</strong>s ménages. Entre autres, le niveau d’instruction <strong>de</strong>s membres du ménage influe sur le comportement procréateur, le recours à la contraception mo<strong>de</strong>rne, le comportement en matière <strong>de</strong> santé, la scolarisation <strong>de</strong>s autres membres du ménage, ainsi que sur les habitu<strong>de</strong>s en matière d’hygiène <strong>et</strong> <strong>de</strong> nutrition. Malgré les efforts importants consentis par le gouvernement en matière d’éducation, le niveau d’instruction <strong>de</strong> la population <strong>de</strong> 6 ans <strong>et</strong> plus <strong>de</strong>meure encore faible, surtout chez les femmes. Dans l’ensemble, un homme sur <strong>de</strong>ux (49 %) <strong>et</strong> près <strong>de</strong> six femmes sur dix (60 %) n’ont aucune instruction (tableaux 2.4.1 <strong>et</strong> 2.4.2). On note également que quel que soit le niveau atteint, les hommes sont plus scolarisés que les femmes. Par ailleurs, les proportions d’hommes <strong>et</strong> <strong>de</strong> femmes ayant terminé un cycle est très faible : seulement 4 % <strong>de</strong>s hommes <strong>et</strong> moins <strong>de</strong> 3 % <strong>de</strong>s femmes ont achevé le niveau primaire, tandis que 31 % <strong>de</strong>s hommes <strong>et</strong> 28 % <strong>de</strong>s femmes n’ont pas achevé ce cycle. Seulement 3,4 % <strong>de</strong>s hommes <strong>et</strong> 1,4 % <strong>de</strong>s femmes ont déclaré avoir achevé le cycle secondaire ou atteint le niveau supérieur ; alors que la proportion <strong>de</strong> ceux qui ont déclaré n’avoir pas terminé le cycle secondaire est <strong>de</strong> 11 % chez les hommes <strong>et</strong> 8 % chez les femmes. L’examen <strong>de</strong>s résultats selon l’âge m<strong>et</strong> en évi<strong>de</strong>nce une n<strong>et</strong>te amélioration du niveau <strong>de</strong> scolarisation <strong>de</strong>s générations anciennes aux plus récentes. En eff<strong>et</strong>, la proportion <strong>de</strong>s hommes sans niveau d’instruction est passée <strong>de</strong> 89 % chez ceux âgés <strong>de</strong> 65 ans <strong>et</strong> plus à 34 % chez ceux <strong>de</strong> 10-14 ans. Le pourcentage plus élevé <strong>de</strong> non instruits chez les garçons <strong>de</strong> 6-9 ans (52 % contre 34 % chez ceux <strong>de</strong> 10-14 ans) s’expliquerait par le fait que certains <strong>de</strong>s garçons <strong>de</strong> 6-9 ans n’ont pas encore intégré le système scolaire. Chez les femmes, les progrès ont été plus rapi<strong>de</strong>s au cours <strong>de</strong> la pério<strong>de</strong> récente. En eff<strong>et</strong>, la proportion <strong>de</strong> celles sans niveau d’instruction est passée <strong>de</strong> 96 % parmi celles <strong>de</strong> 65 ans <strong>et</strong> plus à 36 % à 10-14 ans <strong>et</strong> à 49 % chez celles <strong>de</strong> 15-19 ans, soit à un niveau inférieur à celui <strong>de</strong>s garçons du même âge (38 %).
