The town of Ostra Vetere was built in the inland areas of the Marche, more precisely,<br />
where the hills follow a harmonious succession of up and down curves.<br />

UNA CITTA’<br />
CHE SVETTA<br />
A towering city<br />
L’impianto urbanistico a terrazze<br />
<strong>del</strong> centro urbano di Ostra Vetere<br />
offre immagini e richiami suggestivi:<br />
svelte scalinate salgono a raggiungere<br />
caratteristici scorci. Il profilo<br />
<strong>del</strong>la città è tracciato dalla Chiesa<br />
di S. Maria di Piazza che con le sue<br />
alte guglie svetta sull’intero abitato.<br />
Una costruzione che, seppure relativamente<br />
recente, col suo campanile<br />
slanciato e la elegante cupola neogotica,<br />
propone un colpo d’occhio<br />
spettacolare e di irripetibile effetto.<br />
Nell’ex convento <strong>del</strong>le Clarisse è<br />
conservata una collezione d’arte<br />
che reca testimonianza di uno<br />
splendore non dimenticato: quello<br />
<strong>del</strong>l’antica abbazia<br />
benedettina e <strong>del</strong>la<br />
chiesa di S. Francesco,<br />
un tempo<br />
ubicata nell’area di<br />
Piazza <strong>del</strong>la Libertà<br />
e demolita all’inizio<br />
<strong>del</strong> Novecento.<br />
The urban terrace setting of the town<br />
centre of Ostra Vetere offers evocative<br />
images and memories: stairways quickly<br />
climb upwards where characteristic<br />
scenic views can be enjoyed. The city’s<br />
skyline is formed by the church of Santa<br />
Maria di Piazza, which dominates the entire<br />
town with its tall spires. It is a construction<br />
that, though relatively recent, offers a<br />
spectacular and unique view thanks to its<br />
soaring bell tower and elegant neo-gothic<br />
dome. An art collection that bears<br />
evidence of unforgotten splendours<br />
is preserved in the former convent<br />
of the Poor Clares: that of the ancient<br />
Benedictine abbey and of the church of S.<br />
Francesco which once stood in Piazza <strong>del</strong>la<br />
Libertà, liberty square, but which were<br />
later demolished at the beginning of the<br />
tenth century.<br />
