Harm to Self / Harm to OthersSet all that aside. Suppose, for the sake of argument, that memoryerasure on the scale Eternal Sunshine depicts will one day bepossible. Were that the case, should we use the technology? Anethical assessment of the technology will have to consider twomain questions: will <strong>it</strong> harm the user? Will <strong>it</strong> harm others?How might memory erasure or alteration result in harm to self?Recall that our ident<strong>it</strong>y, in the sense of who we are, what mattersto us and what we stand for, is tied closely to our recall ofsignificant moments from our lives. As Marya Schechtman pointsout, persons are essentially narrative beings: they areconst<strong>it</strong>uted by the stories they tell themselves and one anotherabout their lives 6 . This is the case both at the most trivial andthe most profound level of our lives. Almost all of our dailyactiv<strong>it</strong>ies take their significance from their place in an ongoingnarrative. I type this sentence in order to finish this paragraph,and I aim to finish this paragraph in order to finish this paper;and I want to finish this paper in order to… what? We can tracethe significance of this work to me ultimately all the way to whatSartre called my fundamental project, which is my way of living mylife 7 . Perhaps I aim (at a level slightly less fundamental thanthe one Sartre had in mind) to boost my CV and get a better job,thereby to increase my income and my personal comfort, or perhapsI aim at recogn<strong>it</strong>ion from my peers, or at increasing the amountknowledge in the world.
