It has been said that hate is not the oppos<strong>it</strong>e oflove, since both are forms are responding to the individual<strong>it</strong>y ofthe other. The profound indifference that is the product of trueforgetting, however, might be far more damaging to our sense ofworth than mere hate, or the lack of recogn<strong>it</strong>ion. Just considerhow Joel responds when Clementine cannot recall even the existenceof their relationship.Why is this profound indifference so damaging to our sense ofident<strong>it</strong>y? When we have had a long and significant relationshipw<strong>it</strong>h another person, our ident<strong>it</strong>y‐const<strong>it</strong>uting narrative nowincorporates that relationship into to <strong>it</strong>s core. The relationshipmight be conceptualized as the culmination of an important plotline,as <strong>it</strong> were, in the way in which relationships are oftenunderstood in many movies. If the other person then erases thememory of that relationship from her mind, there is an importantsense in which <strong>it</strong> is as if <strong>it</strong> never was. There is l<strong>it</strong>tle practicaldifference, for us, between actually having had the relationshipand merely having fantasized <strong>it</strong> (in this regard, <strong>it</strong> is veryimportant whether or not third‐parties recall the relationship, asEternal Sunshine recognizes. If not only Clementine, but all theirmutual friends, have forgotten the relationship, then <strong>it</strong> trulycannot serve any ident<strong>it</strong>y‐const<strong>it</strong>uting role any longer. If, on theother hand, Clementine has erased <strong>it</strong> but everyone else remembers<strong>it</strong>, then the effect is closer to the kind of result caused by thedeath of the partner: the dialogue can continue, though <strong>it</strong> can nolonger continue w<strong>it</strong>h the most central actor in <strong>it</strong>).Now, <strong>it</strong> is one thing to say that erasing a memory would cause aharm to other people, and qu<strong>it</strong>e another thing to say that <strong>it</strong> is –all things considered – impermissible to erase the memory. Thereare many things that are morally wrong, but which we are perm<strong>it</strong>tedto do. We may, for instance, lie to each other, w<strong>it</strong>hout fear oflegal sanction. Roughly speaking, the lim<strong>it</strong>s of what we are44
