READING LITERACY IN THE 21ST
CENTURY: NEW LITERACIES
AND THE PRESERVATION OF
THE TRADITION
SUMMARY
TA
TAGAD
In the 20th century, reading literacy
was defined as individual’s capacity to
decode and understand written text
and learning and cultivation of this
skill was closely linked to the book as a
vehicle and to a certain reading culture.
In the era of digital media, the term has
become less clear; in addition to ability
to understand, use, and create written
text, definitions of literacy may include
the ability to read graphs, images and
audio-visual information in various
media. Moreover, the new information
environment brings along a new reading
culture. From the educator’s point of
view, it is important to establish the role
of the reading literacy in the context of
new literacies, as well as to devise new
teaching strategies taking into account
the paradigm shift in literary and book
culture.
