54. kimatthāya mahāpañña pañcamaṁ paṭhavikampanaṁ?<br />

etam atthaṁ pavakkhāhi tava chandavasānugā. 416 |<br />

54. (The king asked:) “What is <strong>the</strong> reason, o great sage, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifth earthquake?<br />

Tell me this matter, if that is consistent (?) with your pleasure and will.”<br />

55. avaddhamāsaṁ pātimokkhaṁ uddisissanti te tadā,<br />

uposathagharaṁ nāma idh’ okāse bhavissati. |<br />

55. “Each fortnight <strong>the</strong>y will here recite <strong>the</strong> Pātimokkha; on this very spot <strong>the</strong><br />

Uposatha hall will stand.”<br />

56. aparam pi ca okāse <strong>the</strong>raṁ pupphavaraṁ adā,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ro ca puppham ādāya tamokāse pamuñcayi.<br />

tatthāpi paṭhavī kampi chaṭṭhaṁ paṭhavikampanaṁ. |<br />

56. (The king) presented beautiful flowers to <strong>the</strong> Thera also in ano<strong>the</strong>r place; <strong>the</strong><br />

Thera accepted <strong>the</strong> flowers and threw <strong>the</strong>m down on that spot. Then <strong>the</strong> earth<br />

quaked again; this was <strong>the</strong> sixth earthquake.<br />

57. idam pi acchariyaṁ disvā mahājanā samāgatā<br />

aññamaññaṁ pamodanti vihāro hissatī idha. 417 |<br />

57. Witnessing this miracle also, <strong>the</strong> crowds who had assembled, joyfully thus<br />

addressed each o<strong>the</strong>r: “Here a Vihāra will stand.”<br />

58. bhiyyo cittaṁ pasādetvā rājā <strong>the</strong>rānam abravī:<br />

kimatthāya mahāpañña chaṭṭhaṁ paṭhavikampanaṁ? |<br />

58. The king who was still more delighted, said to <strong>the</strong> Theras: “What is <strong>the</strong><br />

reason, o great Sage, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sixth earthquake?”<br />

59. yāvatā saṅghikā lābhaṁ bhikkhusaṅghā samāgatā<br />

idh’ okāse mahārāja labhissanti anāgate. 418 | [73]<br />

59. “As long as in future [179] times <strong>the</strong> alms due to <strong>the</strong> Fraternity (will be<br />

distributed), <strong>the</strong> assembled Fraternities <strong>of</strong> Bhikkhus will receive <strong>the</strong>m, o great<br />

king, on this very spot.”<br />

417 aññamaññe kaṅkhanti vihārehirājeti idha A B G2, aññamaññaṁ pamodanti vihāro<br />

pamodenti vihāro hessatī idha?<br />
