After the business operation of the marble factory
and mining concession came to an end, continuing the
enterprise on the remaining land and capital becomes
the challenge for the owner who ends up transforming
the existing assets into a new hospitality service that
goes by the name Re | Sort Gra | Ble. The 1,000-square
meter resort in Pak-Chong, Nakhon Ratchasima is
materialised from the concept where architecture is
developed to coincide with the site’s physical characters
and context and its connection with the landscape in
both visual and intuitive level. The site comes with a
limitation with its geographical characteristic as an open
plain that becomes an obstacle for the way the architecture
wishes to be perceived. The architect, however,
maximises the potential of the space and architectural
structure into a distinctive piece of landscape in its own
right while fulfilling the required functionalities through
carefully orchestrated floor plan and architectural
language. The result is the program that stimulates the
unobstructed functional flow instead of putting the emphasis
entirely on the interior of the rooms. Additionally,
the site’s background as a mine has ‘marble’ in both
complete and almost-complete condition as the perfect
capital. The material is chosen as the protagonist of this
architectural narrative, appearing in different shapes and
forms as the structure’s compositions. Marble can be
found in elements such as the pool, furniture and parts
of sanitary ware, including the construction of the resort’s
walls where the luxurious material is used instead of
bricks. The owner’s collection of ornamental wood,
vintage roof shingles, and wooden panels of various
sizes salvaged from demolished antique buildings on
the site are reused as building elements in different
parts of the architecture, adding an interesting flair to
the program’s overall aesthetic.
