Two weeks after Mrigadayavan Palace, Assistant<br />
Professor Sudjit S.Sananwai joined another survey<br />
with Mr.Markku Mattila, the initiator of VERNADOC<br />
who flew all the way from Finland to explore the houses<br />
of the Batak people at Lake Toba on Indonesia’s Sumatra<br />
Island. Ms.Unaisati Bujung, an Indonesian architect<br />
who volunteered through VERNADOC at Mrigadayavan<br />
Palace met with the team of new volunteers from Aceh<br />
who were assigned to survey and document the buildings<br />
with pencil drawings. The team parted ways as the<br />
drawings will be finalized with ink and, while the completion<br />
of the works remains indefinite, the coming of two<br />
VERNADOC experts from Finland and Thailand caused<br />
Dr. Kemas who had just finished his VERNADOC session<br />
to fly in from Jakarta to discuss the possibility of organizing<br />
VERNADOC in Indonesia under the collaboration<br />
of a network of students of vernacular architecture with<br />
different educational and technical backgrounds from<br />
different parts of Southeast Asia and the Asia Pacific.<br />
The distinctive characteristic of Batak architecture’s<br />
identity and the spectacular geography of Lake Toba<br />
impressed everyone, especially those who were witnessing<br />
them for the first time as it was mutually<br />
agreed upon that another Batak VERNADOC must be<br />
held by the Indonesian veterans in the future. When the<br />
time comes, we believe that the Thai veterans will be<br />
more than welcome to join because the friendship that<br />
took place at Mrigadayavan Palace has taken manyThai<br />
students past the language boundary despite the considerably<br />
short period of time they spent together. With<br />
this friendship, experience and expertise that are growing<br />
by the day, everyone is now ready to explore and document<br />
vernacular architecture in every corner of the world.<br />
