► DIE GEBÄUDE
Die vom Stil des Architekten Antonio
Gaudí inspirierten Zwillingsbauten Can
Casasayas (1908-1910) und Pensión La
Menorquina (1909-1911) an der Plaça del
Mercat wurden von Franscisco Roca Sima
und Guillem Reynés erbaut. Auftraggeber
für die zwei Jugendstil-Gebäude war der
Konditormeister Josep Casasayas Casajuana.
Ein paar Häuser weiter wird die Confi
teria Frasquet von Casasayas Nachfahren
noch heute betrieben.
► THE BUILDINGS
The twin buildings of Can Casasayas
(1908-1910) and Pensión La Menorquina
(1909-1911) on the Plaça del Mercat are
infl uenced by the style of architect Antoni
Gaudí. They were commissioned by the
master confectioner Josep Casasayas
Casajuana and built by the Mallorcan
architects Francisco Roca i Simó and
Guillem Reynés. A few doors down you
can buy sweet treats from Casasayas’
heirs at the Confi teria Frasquet.
► DER BAUSTIL
In Katalonien, aber auch auf den balearischen
Inseln, entwickelte sich um die
Jahrhundertwende eine dem Jugendstil
zugeordnete Strömung, die als Katalanischer
Modernismus bekannt ist. Can
Casasayas und Pensión La Menorquina
sind zwei Beispiele dieses Stils, der durch
geschwungene Wandfl ächen geprägt ist,
die sich sogar in den Fensterläden fortsetzen.
Viele Gebäude des Modernismus benutzen
auch bunte Kachel-Ornamente.
► THE STYLE
The Catalan search for a national
identity at the beginning of the 20th
century led to a cultural movement known
in Catalan as modernisme. It is often
understood to be related to art nouveau
and its architecture prefers curved
features over straight lines. Can
Casasayas and Pensión La Menorquina
are typical examples of the style, which
often features rich decoration and detail,
sometimes with an abundance of colour.
