Kehrichtheizkraftwerk (KHK) St.Gallen
Das Kehrichtheizkraftwerk (KHK) St. Gallen bzw. gemäss
altem Namen die Kehrichtverbrennungsanlage St.Gallen
ist seit 1972 in Betrieb und ein wesentlicher Bestandteil
des Energiekonzeptes 2050 der Stadt St.Gallen. Mehr als
8 000 Haushalte sind heute an das Fernwärmenetz angeschlossen
und erhalten ökologische Energie aus dem
KHK. Die beiden Kessel des KHK sind in der Lage, je ca.
fünf Tonnen Abfall pro Stunde durchzusetzen. Die dabei
freigesetzte Energie wird zur Speisung der Fernwärmeversorgung
genutzt. Ein Leitungsnetz von rund 16 km Länge
trägt die erzeugte Energie zu den verschiedenen Abnehmern.
Die durch die Fernwärmeversorgung substituierte Ölmenge
beträgt rund 6 500 Tonnen pro Jahr. Zusätzlich werden
rund 33 000 MWh elektrischer Energie erzeugt. Der aktuelle
Energienutzungsgrad beträgt bei der Stromproduktion
16,5% und bei der Wärmeproduktion 25,1%. Die Vorgaben
der Energieverordnung des Bundes werden mit der heutigen
Anlage übertroffen und das KHK konnte im Energiebereich
nach der ISO-Norm 50001 zertifiziert werden.
Vor einigen Jahren ist das KHK dazu übergegangen, ein
integriertes Managementsystem zu implementieren.
Durch die daraus resultierende Verpflichtung zur ständigen
Verbesserung in allen Bereichen hat der Betrieb
markante Fortschritte erzielt. Alle Arbeitsabläufe sind systematisch
bezüglich Qualität und Umweltrelevanz erfasst und
das System ist nach den ISO-Normen 9001 (Qualität) und
14001 (Umwelt) zertifiziert. Ein wesentlicher Aspekt der
Betriebsführung liegt im Bereich der Sicherheit des KHK
für Mensch und Umwelt sowie der Nachhaltigkeit der
Investitionen. Arbeitssicherheit und Gesundheitsschutz
sind wichtige Themen in jeder auf nachhaltigen Erfolg
ausgerichteten Unternehmenskultur. Mit der Zertifizierung
der Anlage nach OHSAS 18001 wird den erwähnten Anliegen
Rechnung getragen.
Die Reinigung der Rauchgase aus dem Verbrennungsprozess
erfolgt über ein mehrstufiges Verfahren. Zuerst
werden die Rauchgase im Dampfkessel abgekühlt und die

The St. Gallen waste incineration power plant has been
in operation since 1972 and is a key component of the
city of St.Gallen‘s Energiekonzept 2050. More than
8,000 households are today on the long-distance heating
grid and receive ecological energy from the KHK.
The two boilers of the KHK can each combust around
five tonnes of waste per hour. The energy this produces
is fed into the long-distance heating supply. A pipeline
network of around 16 km transports the energy to the
various users. The amount of oil replaced by the longdistance
heating system is around 6,500 tonnes per
year. They also help generate 33,000 MWh of electrical
energy. The current level of energy utilisation is 16.5%
for electricity and 25.1% for heat. Hence, the plant
exceeds all requirements set by the federal energy
ordinance and the KHK has earned ISO 50001 certification
for its energy production.
A few years ago, the KHK changed to an integrated
management system. Its resulting commitment to
constantly improve has led to huge progress in all its
divisions. The quality and environmental relevance of
all work processes is systematically recorded and the
system has ISO 9001 (quality) and 14001 (environment)
certification.
A key aspect of the management lies in the safety of
the KHK for people and the environment, and in the
lasting nature of the investments. Working safety and
health protection are important aspects of any corporate
culture that aims to secure lasting success. This is
accounted for with the OHSAS 18001 certification of
the plant.
The flue gases from the combustion process are cleaned
in a multi-staged process. They are first cooled in a
steam boiler and the bottom ash is removed. Spray
dryers in which the neutralised washing water is
evaporated continue the gas cleaning process. Then
