both aircraft departed despite gro<strong>und</strong> collision and passenger compla<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

An American Airl<strong>in</strong>es Boe<strong>in</strong>g 767-300, registration N366AA<br />
perform<strong>in</strong>g fl ight AA-67 from Barcelona,SP (Spa<strong>in</strong>) to New<br />
York JFK,NY (USA), had taxied to the hold<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t runway<br />
25L and was hold<strong>in</strong>g short of the runway on hold<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>e G3<br />
(most western hold<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>e).<br />
A Ryanair Boe<strong>in</strong>g 737-800, registration EI-EKB perform<strong>in</strong>g<br />
fl ight FR-8136 from Barcelona,SP (Spa<strong>in</strong>) to Ibiza,SP (Spa<strong>in</strong>)<br />
with 169 passengers and 6 crew, was taxi<strong>in</strong>g along Barcelona’s<br />
taxiway K for departure from runway 25L and was maneouver<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to pass beh<strong>in</strong>d the Boe<strong>in</strong>g 767-300.<br />
A number of passengers on board of the Boe<strong>in</strong>g 737-800 observed<br />
the right hand w<strong>in</strong>g of the aircraft contact the tailplane<br />
of the Boe<strong>in</strong>g 767-300 and rose out of their seats attract<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the attention of a fl ight attendant. A passenger told<br />
the fl ight attendant, that their aircraft had hit the aircraft<br />
besides them. The fl ight attendant contacted the purser,<br />
who <strong>in</strong>structed her to contact the fl ight deck, she contacted<br />
the fl ight deck and <strong>in</strong>formed the capta<strong>in</strong> that passengers<br />
had seen their aircraft had hit another aircraft. The capta<strong>in</strong><br />
responded however everyth<strong>in</strong>g was fi ne and she cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />
with the takeoff about 2 m<strong>in</strong>utes after the Boe<strong>in</strong>g 767.<br />
Immediately after departure the passengers <strong>in</strong>sisted the<br />
fl ight was not safe and they had collided with another aircraft,<br />
one of the passengers identifi ed himself as an eng<strong>in</strong>eer.<br />
The fl ight attendant told the eng<strong>in</strong>eer that the capta<strong>in</strong><br />
had been <strong>in</strong>formed and had told everyth<strong>in</strong>g was fi ne. No further<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation was forwarded to the fl ight deck.<br />

After land<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Ibiza, while disembark<strong>in</strong>g, the passengers<br />
aga<strong>in</strong> spoke up claim<strong>in</strong>g the fl ight had been unsafe.<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g the turnaro<strong>und</strong> the fl ight attendant <strong>in</strong>formed the<br />
purser that one of the passengers observ<strong>in</strong>g the collision<br />
was an eng<strong>in</strong>eer. Neither approached the fl ight crew however.<br />
Follow<strong>in</strong>g the return fl ight FR-8137 the purser talked to the<br />
capta<strong>in</strong> and <strong>in</strong>formed her that one of the passengers observ<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the collision was an eng<strong>in</strong>eer.<br />
In the follow<strong>in</strong>g it was identifi ed that the right hand w<strong>in</strong>glet<br />
of the Boe<strong>in</strong>g 737-800 had received damage, the Boe<strong>in</strong>g<br />
767-300 was fo<strong>und</strong> with damage to the left hand stabilizer<br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g land<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> New York.<br />
Spa<strong>in</strong>’s CIAIAC is <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g the occurrence confi rm<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
Boe<strong>in</strong>g 737-800 had contacted a Boe<strong>in</strong>g 767-300 hold<strong>in</strong>g<br />
short of runway 25L, the Boe<strong>in</strong>g 737-800 had received damage<br />
to the right hand w<strong>in</strong>glet and the Boe<strong>in</strong>g 767-300 damage<br />
to the left hand stabilizer.<br />
An <strong>in</strong>ternal Ryanair document forwarded to The Aviation Herald<br />
states, that none of the Ryanair crew members observed<br />
anyth<strong>in</strong>g unusual as the taxiway was rather bumpy, it was<br />
only fl ight attendant #2 who became aware of the collision<br />
through the observed passenger reactions.<br />
The airl<strong>in</strong>e said the <strong>in</strong>vestigation has been completed, the<br />
report appo<strong>in</strong>ted no blame and released no safety recommendation<br />
or requirements to Ryanair.
