Dr. Jörg Hernler awarded honorary professorship<br />

Jörg Hernler, the former Head of the<br />
Department of Taxation at Bertelsmann<br />
AG, was awarded an honorary professorship<br />
by the President of the Univer -<br />
sity of Paderborn, Prof. Dr. Nikolaus<br />
Risch on July 15, 2011. The congratulatory<br />
address was delivered by Prof. Dr.<br />
Caren Sureth, Chair of Business Admi -<br />
nis tration, especially Business Taxation.<br />
Dr. Hernler received this honor from<br />
the Faculty of Business Administration<br />
and Economics in recognition of his<br />
long-standing commitment to teaching,<br />
specifically his lectures on business<br />
taxation, international business taxation,<br />
entrepreneurial decision-making,<br />
and mergers & acquisitions. He has<br />
published an impressive list of scientific<br />
papers, most of which concern the<br />
interface between business administration<br />
and applied taxation. His concept<br />
for the European Tax Allocation System<br />
(ETAS), a proposal to harmonize business<br />
taxation across the European Union,<br />
is currently undergoing consultation.<br />
Dr. Hernler is currently a partner at<br />
Schlütter-Bornheim-Seitz, a tax consulting<br />
and law firm in Cologne, and Of<br />
Counsel at WTG/WTS, a tax consulting<br />
group based in Vienna. Between 1984<br />

and 2010 he occupied various functions<br />
at Bertelsmann AG in Gütersloh,<br />
Germany, with his most recent post<br />
that of Head of Department of Taxation.<br />
His relationship with the University of<br />
Paderborn began during this period.<br />
Dr. Hernler also serves on several taxation<br />
committees, is a member of Fach -<br />
institut <strong>für</strong> Steuerberater, a specialist<br />
institution that undertakes research<br />
into the interpretation and continued<br />
development of tax law, and has served<br />
as honorary judge at the Münster Court<br />
of Finance. In 2001 the Austrian Minister<br />
of Finance awarded him the Gold Cross<br />
of Honor of the Republic of Austria.<br />
4th DS&OR Forum<br />
July 2, 2011<br />
The DS&OR Forum is organized by the<br />
DS&OR Cluster, whose members are<br />
the DS&OR Lab led by Prof. Dr. Leena<br />
Suhl, ORCONOMY GmbH, myconsult<br />
GMbH, and the DS&OR Alumni association.<br />
Its aim is to build and strengthen<br />
a network of experts in decision support.<br />
The around 50 participants had come<br />
to the Technology Park for a series<br />
of presentations on current research<br />
issues, applied projects, and ongoing<br />
developments in the Cluster. There<br />
were also opportunities to meet col-<br />
leagues in a more informal setting. The<br />
DS&OR Lab awarded prizes to students<br />
Simon Gurke, Daniela Lüers and Torben<br />
Schramme for their outstanding final<br />
theses.<br />
Prof. Dr. Uwe Suhl, Managing Director<br />
of MOPS Optimierungssysteme Gmbh<br />
& Co KG, delivered a lecture on optimizing<br />
the logistics of natural gas storage<br />
facilities and used a current project as<br />
an illustrative example. Prof. Dr. Dennis<br />
Kundisch discussed an ongoing research<br />
project at the Chair of Business Infor ma -<br />
tion Systems (Information Management<br />
& E-Finance) that aims to explore the<br />
influence of electronic bidding systems<br />
on sunk costs in connection with online<br />
auctions. Various workshops on teambuilding<br />
and stress management rounded<br />
off the agenda. The event closed<br />
with a physical challenge in the shape<br />
of busines yoga exercises for all participants.<br />
