The foetus is capable <strong>of</strong> hearing after 21 weeks, and can perceive touch.<br />

For the embryo, the skin can be understood as an extension <strong>of</strong> the ear.<br />

The foetus perceives the sounds and rhythm in his/her mother's<br />

surroundings. The feel <strong>of</strong> the walls <strong>of</strong> the womb, the flow <strong>of</strong> blood in the<br />

vessels, the sounds <strong>of</strong> the bowels, the mother's voice, heartbeats and<br />

breathing are some examples <strong>of</strong> sounds that surround the foetus. The<br />

experiences <strong>of</strong> sound vibration and movement are the main stimuli and<br />

communication means for the foetus and complement all the<br />

interconnected experiences <strong>of</strong> pregnancy.<br />

<strong>Music</strong> can be used as a means <strong>of</strong> communication with the foetus as he/<br />

she is sensitive to sounds and vibrations. It is believed that<br />

communicative stimulation in this period can be beneficial, and its<br />

positive effects will have lasting results affecting a person's life forever.<br />

The strengthening <strong>of</strong> the communication bonds between a mother and her<br />

child can contribute to the emotional health <strong>of</strong> both, and affects also the<br />

emotional health <strong>of</strong> other involved parts– the father, other children and<br />

closer relatives.<br />

“Another important aspect in <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Therapy</strong> is [that] the work you are<br />

developing during pregnancy is providing these girls with a tool they<br />

will be able to use themselves, a language they can use with their babies.<br />
