In the following notices <strong>of</strong> the Highland clans we shall<br />

take the various great tribes into which the <strong>Highlanders</strong> were<br />

originally divided, and which are identic with the old earldoms,<br />

in their order ; and after giving a sketch <strong>of</strong> the history and<br />

fall <strong>of</strong> their ancient chiefs or earls, we shall proceed, under<br />

the head <strong>of</strong> each tribe, to the different clans which formed a<br />

part <strong>of</strong> that tribe, and then for the first time appeared in<br />

independence.
