character <strong>of</strong> the clan throughout that enterprise.<br />

In the )'ear 171 5 the Macleans also joined the rising under<br />

the Earl <strong>of</strong> Mar, and suffered upon that occasion the same<br />

penalt}'<br />

with the other clans who had been induced to take a<br />

part in that unfortunate expedition. But their estates having<br />

been afterwards restored, they were prevailed upon by the persuasions<br />

<strong>of</strong> President Forbes to remain quiet during the subse-<br />

quent insurrection <strong>of</strong> the year 1745.<br />

Nevertheless, although they had thus escaped the snare into<br />

which so man\' <strong>of</strong> the clans fell upon this occasion, the family<br />

became soon after extinct, and the clan is now divided into<br />

several independent branches who contest with each other the<br />

honour <strong>of</strong> the chiefship.<br />
