clan Donald, as undoubted representative <strong>of</strong> Donald, the<br />

common ancestor <strong>of</strong> the clan and when the services rendered<br />

peerage from Charles H., Glengarry indicated his rights by<br />

assuming the title <strong>of</strong> Lord Macdonell and Arross, which, on<br />

the failure <strong>of</strong> male heirs <strong>of</strong> his bodv', did not descend to his<br />

successors, although his lands formed in consequence the barony<br />

<strong>of</strong> Macdonell.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Ranaldson IMacdonells, <strong>of</strong> ?kIacdonell and Glengarry, are the unquestionable<br />

male representatives <strong>of</strong> the founder <strong>of</strong> the clan, and therefore<br />

possess the right <strong>of</strong> blood to the chiefship.<br />

<strong>The</strong> jMacdogalls have, in general, been derived from Dogall,<br />

the eldest son <strong>of</strong> Somerled, and it has been hitherto assumed,<br />

that Alexander de Ergadia, who first appears in 1284, and who<br />

was the undoubted ancestor <strong>of</strong> the clan, was the son <strong>of</strong> Ewen<br />

de Ergadia, or king Ewen, who appears so prominently at the<br />

period <strong>of</strong> the cession <strong>of</strong> the Isles. Bat this derivation, to which<br />

the resemblance <strong>of</strong> name has probably given rise, is unquestion-<br />

ably erroneous, for independently <strong>of</strong> the fact that there is strong<br />

evidence for king Ewen having died without male issue, it is
