was such as to i^ain him the respect and admiration <strong>of</strong> all.<br />

<strong>The</strong> estates <strong>of</strong> the famil}- became <strong>of</strong> course included in the<br />

numerous forfeitures <strong>of</strong> that period ; but they were afterwards<br />

restored, notwithstanding that this clan had taken a part in<br />

every attempt made b_\' the <strong>Highlanders</strong> in favour <strong>of</strong> the family<br />

<strong>The</strong> traditions <strong>of</strong> the M'Nachtans derive them from Lochtay,<br />

where they are said to have been Thanes, but the genealogy<br />

contained in the manuscript <strong>of</strong> 1450, puts it beyond all doubt<br />

that they were one <strong>of</strong> the clans descended from the tribe <strong>of</strong> Moray,<br />

and formerly united under its Maormors. <strong>The</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> the<br />

ancient district <strong>of</strong> Mora)- is still occupied by clans descended<br />

from that tribe, with the exception <strong>of</strong> one portion <strong>of</strong> consider-<br />

able extent. This portion consists <strong>of</strong> that part <strong>of</strong> the ancient<br />

district which extends between the lordship <strong>of</strong> Badenoch and<br />

Strathnairn and the southern boundary <strong>of</strong> Ross, and comprehends<br />

the extensive districts <strong>of</strong> the Aird, Glenurchart, Glenmori-<br />

son, Abertariff, Stratherick, &;c. This northern division <strong>of</strong> the<br />

ancient district is intersected b)' Loch Oich and Loch Ness, and<br />

is chiefly in pos.session <strong>of</strong> the Erasers, Grants, and Macdonalds,<br />

but as all these families can be traced as having acquired posses-<br />

sion <strong>of</strong> the lands at different periods, and as deriving their origin<br />

from the occupiers <strong>of</strong> other districts, it is plain that we must
