The rows of cars with <strong>the</strong>ir eng<strong>in</strong>es rest<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

wooden blocks daily <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong> length, and we<br />

all began to wonder what would become of us<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> event of a retreat. For a long time,<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ly through sickness, we had been suffer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from a shortage of men. This had been temporarily<br />

remedied by <strong>the</strong> attachment of a<br />

section of Serbian drivers, and now, by <strong>the</strong><br />

delicious irony of Base depots and <strong>the</strong> high<br />

''<br />

gods, <strong>the</strong>y began to send us re<strong>in</strong>forcements,"<br />

as <strong>the</strong>y are technically called. It ended up <strong>in</strong><br />

our hav<strong>in</strong>g a personnel of two hundred and<br />

fifty for eight runnable vans.<br />

Daily <strong>the</strong>re were aeroplane "strafes," but<br />

very few bombs were dropped. We used to<br />

hope <strong>the</strong>y would drop bombs on our derelicts—<br />

anyth<strong>in</strong>g, anyth<strong>in</strong>g to get rid of <strong>the</strong>se long l<strong>in</strong>es<br />

of idle vans on ''<br />

<strong>Macedonia</strong>n spr<strong>in</strong>gs "— but<br />

<strong>the</strong>y never did it. What <strong>the</strong>y<br />

did do was to<br />

br<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>the</strong> observation Sausage twice,<br />

though, for our enterta<strong>in</strong>ment, and each time<br />

<strong>the</strong> observer landed safely.<br />

It doesn't sound much written down, and it<br />

was, of course, a commonplace <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> West ;<br />

but th<strong>in</strong>k for a moment what it means. The<br />

observer is sitt<strong>in</strong>g up aloft direct<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fire of<br />

his guns. Suddenly an enemy 'plane appears.<br />

Observer and enemy each fire <strong>the</strong>ir mach<strong>in</strong>eguns,<br />

but <strong>the</strong> enemy has <strong>the</strong> easier mark. He
