special and well-deserved order of praise from<br />

<strong>the</strong> General Command<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

For a week or two it cont<strong>in</strong>ued pa<strong>in</strong>fully cold<br />

<strong>in</strong> tents at night. One experienced <strong>the</strong> greatest<br />

difficulty <strong>in</strong> sleep<strong>in</strong>g warm, and would wake up<br />

shiver<strong>in</strong>g, however cunn<strong>in</strong>gly one had rolled<br />

oneself <strong>in</strong> one's blankets. Then low tempera-<br />

tures became a th<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> past, and spr<strong>in</strong>g<br />

came gradually upon us. Daily we watched <strong>the</strong><br />

snow melt<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s, and many and<br />

beautiful were <strong>the</strong> effects of <strong>the</strong> ris<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

sett<strong>in</strong>g sun and moon. But as everybody<br />

'*<br />

nowadays hates scenery," <strong>the</strong> temptation to<br />

reel off a few pages of it is resolutely overcome.<br />

The vans that were not work<strong>in</strong>g were overhauled<br />

and washed and polished till <strong>the</strong> men<br />

were sick of <strong>the</strong> job. Even <strong>the</strong> copper term<strong>in</strong>als<br />

of <strong>the</strong> ignition wires were burnished and <strong>the</strong><br />

dents taken out of <strong>the</strong> mudguards. But still<br />

our spr<strong>in</strong>gs did not arrive, though we did<br />

ultimately get a large quantity of spr<strong>in</strong>g steel<br />

which enabled us to turn out home-made<br />

for ourselves. We used to wonder if we<br />

spr<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

were dest<strong>in</strong>ed to stay <strong>the</strong>re star<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> hills<br />

till <strong>the</strong> War was over, and ano<strong>the</strong>r favourite<br />

speculation was what would happen to us <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

event of a retreat. The Monastir Front was by<br />

no means secure, and Monastir itself was daily<br />

suffer<strong>in</strong>g a serious bombardment.<br />
