selves at every turn of <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g track.<br />

The idea <strong>in</strong> start<strong>in</strong>g so early was to get most<br />

of <strong>the</strong> travell<strong>in</strong>g over before it became really<br />

hot. But even so <strong>the</strong> heat was appall<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

<strong>in</strong> spite of General Rout<strong>in</strong>e Orders Sam Browne<br />

was not worn very long, and dry and dusty<br />

lips were wetted at cool mounta<strong>in</strong> streams whose<br />

water had nei<strong>the</strong>r been chlor<strong>in</strong>ated nor boiled.<br />

figs or cherries, followed by a glass of clear,<br />

cold spr<strong>in</strong>g water. The sweet syrupy preserve<br />

seems to make <strong>the</strong> water doubly refresh<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Slatka " was un-<br />

doubtedly an artist of <strong>the</strong> palate. The Serbians,<br />

by <strong>the</strong> way, dr<strong>in</strong>k a great deal of water.<br />

After survey<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> enemy's position, we<br />

watched <strong>the</strong> Serbian woodmen at work. One of<br />

<strong>the</strong> surprises of modern warfare is <strong>the</strong> realization<br />

of <strong>the</strong> amount of timber required. Here <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were shap<strong>in</strong>g stakes for ''<br />

<strong>the</strong> wire,'' cutt<strong>in</strong>g<br />
