<strong>the</strong>se th<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Serbs</strong> would refit, and rest till<br />

<strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g. They asked no longer <strong>in</strong> spite of all<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y had been through and <strong>in</strong> spite of <strong>the</strong><br />

fact that <strong>the</strong>y had been at war s<strong>in</strong>ce 1912. By<br />

<strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g of 1916, supported by <strong>the</strong> Allies, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

would be ready to set out to reconquer <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

beloved Serbia.<br />

assisted by British torpedo boats and trawlers,<br />

who patrolled and swept <strong>the</strong> seas before <strong>the</strong><br />

transports. By <strong>the</strong> end of May an army of<br />

n<strong>in</strong>ety thousand fight<strong>in</strong>g men, second to none<br />

for valour and <strong>the</strong> will to w<strong>in</strong>, had been landed<br />

at Mikra Bay.<br />

Up to <strong>the</strong>n, except<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> Adriatic Mission<br />

and certa<strong>in</strong> A.S.C. Units and Staff Officers at<br />

Corfu, very few British had come <strong>in</strong>to contact<br />

with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Serbs</strong>. But directly <strong>the</strong>y arrived at<br />

Salonica <strong>the</strong>re sprang up a mutual and spontaneous<br />

friendship between <strong>the</strong> two nations
