i64 WITH THE SERBS IN MACEDONIA<br />

Bomb after bomb was ra<strong>in</strong>ed down upon <strong>the</strong><br />

two hospitals. In <strong>the</strong> 36th several patients<br />

were wounded, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 37th two English<br />

nurses and four male orderlies were killed and<br />

n<strong>in</strong>e o<strong>the</strong>rs wounded.<br />

One poor nurse met her death as she knelt by<br />

<strong>the</strong> bed of a wounded Serb whom she was<br />

endeavour<strong>in</strong>g to lower to <strong>the</strong> floor. The patient<br />

unhurt. Two of <strong>the</strong> orderlies were<br />

escaped<br />

killed while ly<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> X-ray tent.<br />

Then, hav<strong>in</strong>g got rid of all <strong>the</strong>ir bombs, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

went home rejoic<strong>in</strong>g no doubt <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir latest<br />

exhibition of frightfulness, while <strong>the</strong> hospital<br />

buried its dead and ''<br />

carried on ''<br />

as usual.<br />

The British aviators <strong>in</strong> Salonica did not allow<br />

this outrage to pass unpunished. They bombed<br />

<strong>the</strong> enemy aerodrome <strong>in</strong> return four times <strong>in</strong> one<br />

day. Four times <strong>in</strong> one day <strong>the</strong>y came and went.<br />

The terror<br />

Imag<strong>in</strong>e that day for <strong>the</strong> enemy !<br />

of it— <strong>the</strong> eyes glued to <strong>the</strong> sky, <strong>the</strong> nerves on<br />

<strong>the</strong> rack. A good day and a proper answer—<br />

all that could be done. They couldn't br<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>se brave, self-sacrific<strong>in</strong>g women and noncombatants<br />

back, but, dear, grim devils, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

could and <strong>the</strong>y did give <strong>the</strong> fiends someth<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

go<br />

on with !<br />

But oh, <strong>the</strong> folly of it all, <strong>the</strong> utter unreason<br />

of everyth<strong>in</strong>g connected with <strong>the</strong> stupidity<br />

called War ! Its glories are shams, its emotions
